In Ub Iwerks’ cartoon short “Spite Flight” (1933), about a boy entering an air race to earn money to save her girlfriend’s home, an angel trying to hitchhike during the race expresses his frustration. Iwerks’ used the same footage that year in “The Air Race,” proving that recycling was popular as far back as the ‘30s.
